At the eastern edge of Oregon, along the lower Snake River, is an agricultural treasure nestled in the rugged northern Great Basin. Irrigation from the Owyhee Project and research from the Malheur Experiment Station (MES) have helped make Treasure Valley a major producer of sugar beets, potatoes, and some of the nation’s best onions.

With little rainfall each year and precious few sources of water, farming successfully in the high desert is a unique challenge — and an opportunity as golden as an eastern Oregon sunset.

Using the latest in crop technology and working hand-in-hand with local farmers, OSU researchers have helped crack the code of growing abundant crops in this high desert landscape.
